It is estimated that one third of ADHD students have a learning disability or significant processing problem. Such a disability or problem places additional strains on attention. Students who are both ADHD and LD learn differently and need specialized educational help to progress. They must learn how to use their strengths to compensate for areas of weakness. Typically, students with learning disabilities require specialized instruction from trained people.

In order for your child to be eligible for special help for learning disabilities, additional testing to validate the existence of LD and ADHD will be necessary. Once testing is completed, you may request a “staffing” at your child’s school to review the results. During this meeting an individual educational plan, or IEP, will be developed, educational goals will be defined, and eligibility for the services needed to reach these goals will be determined. As a parent of a child with ADHD and learning disabilities, you should be aware that your child is eligible for assistance as defined by Public Law 94-142. Ask the school for a brochure that explains these rights.

Staffings should be cooperative ventures between parents and school personnel. However, schools have limited resources. You may want to supplement your child’s instruction with help from a trained learning specialist outside the school system, if you can afford it. Joining groups like the Learning Disabilities Association of America (LDA) and Children with Attention Deficit Disorder (Ch.A.D.D.) can provide you with additional information and support to meet your needs.
